Doughboy
In 1990 Frank Garvey began work on a series of mechanized sculptures that would eventually
become a surrealistic robotic red-light district. His mechanical beggars, hookers, junkies and
thieves lurched, vomited, chugga-lugged and ranted their way into the world with the suddenness,
rudeness and inevitablility of a mythic kind of heroic retribution. The first in the series was Doughboy, a homeless, late-industrial Mother and Child.
